Mohammed Salisa's own goal during Southampton's 4-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur drew criticism from fans on social media. In action at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Ghanaian centre-back tried to get the ball in front of his own goal, but he hit his own net without pressure from the opposition.

The video of the own goal went viral on social media and the network slammed the 23-year-old, who is playing in the World Cup this November. "It's amazing.

Has there ever been a worse mistake than this when a Black Stars defender was chasing a World Cup appearance?" asked one of the fans.

Another fan said: "Worst own goal by Salisu."

Salisu's mistake made it difficult for Southampton to chase down Spurs in the opening action of the English Premier League.

Last July, Salisu agreed to represent Ghana at the World Cup, but his mistake could affect his selection for Qatar. Ghana will later face Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay in Group H of the World Cup. - AGENCIES
