Manchester: Chelsea have reportedly spent £62 million to sign Spanish left-back Marco Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion.

This allowed Brighton to receive £46 million in income despite signing the player 12 months ago.

The transfer is one of the most interesting examples of the extent to which the players involved are proving that they can be valuable even for just one season in the English Premier League (EPL). Brighton signed Cucurella from Spanish club Getafe for £16 million in August last year and has enjoyed an impressive first campaign in England's top flight.

Reigning champions Manchester City are interested in signing Barcelona's youth club but have rejected Brighton's asking price. Chelsea, now owned by American Todd Boehly and private equity backers, stepped in to complete the deal, which is worth £55 million plus some add-ons.

Brighton manager Graham Potter said the club may not have to sell the player, but unsurprisingly admitted it would be good business. “I think the payment was made correctly and it's another win-win situation. "The player gets a good opportunity, the selling club gets a good fee and the buying club gets a good player. So everyone faces a win-win situation," he said.
